Tips for choosing toys for children

So you need to choose a toy for a child? What an exciting task! Toys can be keys to unlocking the vast and fertile imagination of a child.

When you are thinking of purchasing a toy there are several things to keep in mind.

Aim for toys manufactured in the United States, Canada or Europe this year since most of the dangerous toys are unfortunately coming from Asia these days. It will also help ensure the safety of the product of you are purchasing toys which are made of natural products.

Secondly, make sure you are buying an age and developmentally appropriate toy. Most toys will list an appropriate age range clearly on the box. These are important to adhere to since these ages usually take into account dangers like small removable parts which could be choking hazards. They also ensure a minimization of any frustrations which may come with buying a toy which is below or above a child’s developmental stage.

Thirdly, take into account the child’s interests and personalities. Its all good and well and try and open a child’s horizons or get them interested in things which interest you but if your child opens up that miniature violin and throws is to the side in favor of the three cans of play dough and a plastic knife you need to honor that preference.

For older children, in this day and age, you are probably going to be safe with some sort of video game. If you, like me, are concerned about the lack of fresh air and exercise or children are getting these days then you can still please them and yourself by getting them interactive video games like Dance Dance Revolution or a PSP which can played outside in the sunlight…vitamin D is so important!

If you have NO IDEA what the child you are shopping for would be interested in ask them! Children are usually painfully honest about what they want. And if you can’t ask them, ask several child you know in the same age range what they are looking for under the tree this year and use them as a focus group of sort for figuring out what to buy.

In the end whatever you give them is most likely going to be appreciated if you take some time to enjoy it with them.
